Network Equipments

In order to perform data-processing and communications within the network, computers, peripherals, interface cards and other equipment is needed.
We can devide network hardware into eight categories. They are file server, workstation, network interface card (NIC) , concentrator/hub, repeater, bridges, router, and switch.

File server is the heart of networks. it has large amount of storage space. The network operating software resides on this computer along with any software applications.

Workstation is user computer that is connected to a network . it is configured with NIC, networking software, and appropriate cables. the files can be save in the files cables and almost any computers can serve as workstation.

Network Interface Cards provides physical connection between network and computer workstations. it determines the speed and performances of the network. The most common NIC are Ethernet cards, LocalTalk connectors and token ring cards.

Hub and switch contain ports to connect the devices together. They are connected via networking cables. It facilitates communication between devices. hub transmit all data received to all nod. if there's lot of extra network traffic, the network is less efficient. While switch identifies the devices on the network.

repeaters is used to boost signal. It amplifies the signal it receives and reboadcasts it.

Bridges monitors information traffic on both side of the network so that it can pass packets of information to the correct part. network bridges connect multiple network segments.

Router translate information from one to another. it select the best path to route a message.
